Dear Caring Carol,
More and more people are sending electronic greeting cards (e-cards) these days. I like to send them for birthdays and other occasions since they are just so convenient. I do wonder though, is it appropriate to send my condolences using electronic sympathy cards?

Dear Unsure,
E-cards certainly have their place in this technologically advanced world we live in, but I have to say, I still don’t feel it’s appropriate to send sympathy cards this way. Call me traditional if you will but sending your condolences via email would leave me feeling like you didn’t care enough to take the time to sign and send me a proper sympathy card. I have received E-cards on other occasions and have been touched that someone remembered me and even been quite amused by some of them as they can be very creative and entertaining. But I am sure you will agree there is nothing like receiving a greeting card in the mail and opening it up to see the heartfelt message that the sender wrote inside. I can understand we are all pressed for time these days, so send your electronic messages if you must, but when expressing your sympathy I wouldn’t go there quite yet.
